The tragic tailings dam collapse at the Jagersfontein mine in South Africa on Sunday 11 September 2022 underscores the critical importance, now more than ever, of bringing mine tailings facilities into conformance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). The deadline for GISTM compliance for the highest risk tailings dams is now less than a year away - August 2023. Implementing a comprehensive tailings risk management and monitoring platform that aggregates and analyzes real time environmental data from a full range of sensors and other data sources can help mitigate the risks of such a disaster.
Insight Terra is working with a number of international mining operators to help them comply with GISTM, and as the deadline of August 2023 looms closer, we will be reviewing the Principles and their Requirements that make up the GISTM.
